History of the Engagement Ring (maybe)

Engagement rings started with Maximilian I of Austria -Holy Roman Emperor (b.1459).
Originally only one ring was used for marriage – this means only one ring for both the engagement and the wedding. However, apparently in 1477 when Maximilian expressed his love for Mary of Burgundy (she was rich with loads of land where the good wine comes from - had just inherited, you know how it goes), he gave her an engagement ring (how we like to say: ‘put a ring on it’). This essentially began the tradition for having a ring for the engagement and one for the wedding.
It is very common now, especially in the Western world for an engagement ring to be given during a marriage proposal and a separate wedding ring be given at the wedding ceremony.
It’s on the interwebs so it must be true :P
